Learnage!
I’ve finally memorized 6 new kanji, 雑誌、お願い、お世話に、気持ち、手帳、and one I can’t figure out how to type on the computer. Last week I learned 会社員、医者、学生、大学、and 先生。Those were easy to remember, but the new ones are more fun to write. Everyone, let's all learn kanji! When I first tried to remember the kanji for dictionary I mixed it with the characters from magazine, it was terrible. But now I've got it down pat! I think... I'm waiting for my new electronic Japanese-English dictionary to come in the mail. I can't wait (even though I said I was). My paperback one is really not adequate at all >< But we still get along. Things'll work out in the end ;P

Hi Hanni,
This may be taboo to bring up with your host family, but on the news recently has been the riots in China by students protesting Japanese whitewashing of their horrific acts in China just prior to World War II (the Rape of Nanking, eg.) Does anyone in Japan talk about this issue. Look at one of their history books and see what they have to say about Pearl Harbor (?). Just curious.

Hey Dad- It's on the news all of the time. I'm pretty up to date on it. What happened is the Japanese government approved a history text that described such events as the Rape of Nanking as incidents in which many Chinese were killed. The book was going to be adopted by 18 or so schools (it actually hasn't been published yet). The Chinese are also angered because the Japanese are moving to do some drilling (I believe) in disputed waters. All of this has acclimated into riots and boycotts in China against Japan. In some areas the Chinese cover all Japanese characters. The image I've seen the most is of the Japanese consulate in China which is covered in eggs and paint and the ground is littered with bottles. It is difficult for me to understand such complicated feelings between the two countries being from America, but it certainly is a problem that will unfold either peacefully or not depending on how it is handled. International Festival is tomarrow! we will miss you bunches. The Japanese choir is comming along well. We're playing after the taiko drummers (hard act to follow) we're dressing up a pregnant Sarah. Anyway, how's school? make any new friends? are you eating well? ect.ect.ect. We really need to know what to put in your care pack besides lost starbursts and kleenex.

wish i could see the kanji, that seems so coolbeans. it sounds like you're having a blast and a half! woo! no getting homesick, none of it! you'll be back to normal old american life too fast if you do!

To Katie and Lilli: sing pretty for me and take pictures! Oh, that's what you could send if any one has a digital and could print them out! I could show you off at school! I'm friends with all of the girls in my class but I think the guys find my frightening >< Hehe. Why would anyone think that! They are all very hyper and funny. I think I'm in the coolest class ever, of course besides my classes in the US! I miss you guys! Say hi to everyone for me and good luck with your preformance. Ganbate ne!
To katieandgem: first of all I totally recommend traveling abroad! It'll change how you see things in a good way and it'll also be an experience that not many people are willing to have at your age (high school). I took about a year preparing for my trip. Since I'm here for almost a year and Japan is a popular destination it was a financial challenge. I took a job the summer after sophomore year and started fundraising like crazy. It's not easy but what's a little work when you get to go to Enlgand for a few months!! Usually people who travel in high school go during junior year, but since you're planning for the summer, I'd say see how ready you are. If you're totally up to it and have everything paid for and planned out go this summer. But I think it might be better to go the summer after sophomore year. It gives you more time to prepare and raise money. Extra spending money is always nice :) Your case is a little diff. because they speak English where you want to go so I think it really depends on how you feel about leaving sooner than later.
